The following extract from Alexandria District Order No 589 dated 28/8/17 issued by Brigadier General R C Boyle, CB., Commanding Troops Alexandria District (Egypt), is republished in accordance with para.1919 (XIV) K. R.
"The GOC Alexandria District desires to express his appreciation of the gallantry of No P/5740 L/Cpl Johnson H E, MMP, who was instrumental in rescuing from drowning on the 22nd August 1917, near Chatby, Pte Barlow of the 2/5th Bn Cheshire Regiment. The GOC Alexandria District also directs that this act of gallantry shall be recorded on the Regimental Conduct Sheet of this NCO."
Corps Order Book No. 23 page 157 shows the award of the Royal Humane Society Bronze Medal and Certificate to L/Cpl Johnson for the above act.

Citation: Citation: Johnson. H E L/Cpl Military Police and H A Makawi.At 5 pm on 22 August 1917, a soldier bathing in the sea at Alexandria was carried out 400 yards by strong currents. L/Cpl H E Johnson Military Police and Hassan Aly Makawi swam out and succeeded in bringing the man ashore.
