Citation: Normandy. 6/6/44 to 31/10/44. Citation for MBE: Lieut MULHEIR landed in FRANCE on D Day, 6 June 44, on the staff of MOON assembly Area. From that moment he was a tower of strength to the unit. He was responsible for the traffic layout of the Assembly Area and for traffic control. His men were all category men and it was entirely due to Lieut MULHEIR's actions that they did their job. The conditions were very difficult. The unit area was subject almost nightly to bombing attacks, and it was during this that, with disregard for his own safety, he travelled round to his men, staying with them on their points and encouraging them. On the night of 9 June 44 there was a particularly bad attack with AP bombs and there were quite heavy casualties in one section of the Assembly Area. Lieut MULHEIR immediately went to the spot and took command of the situation although he was by no means the senior officer present. His action steadied the men and he supervised the evacuation of casualties. On 12 June again he proceeded immediately to the scene of another attack and supervised the evacuation of casualties. On 12 June 44 it was necessary to reorganise the area for the reception of 8 Corps. This meant the re-signing of the area in a hurry as the unloading of the Corps was expected to begin at any time. This re-signing was carried out by Lieut MULHEIR at night through further air raids until the task was finished. Although the traffic circuits had to be changed, at no time was there any block in the flow of traffic.Col E Montgomery Comd 101 Beach Sub Area. Comd 11 L of C Area. Maj Gen Comd L of C.
