He won the award accompanied by Lance Corporal Kingscote whose citation reads: This NCO was accompanied by A/Sergeant Macgillicuddy, assisted him in every way and covered him from the enemy whilst engaged in firing the oil. Throughout he acted with great coolness and resource.Citation WO 373/146/87MacGillycuddy, No. 409069 Sgt. Dennis Michael Edmund, FSP. During the withdrawal from the River Escaut, this NCO reconnoitered in advance the oil refineries at Willems, waited until the whole of the rearguard, 3rd Infantry Brigade, had passed, so as not to risk interfering in any way with their movement, and, with complete disregard for his own safety, successfully fired the large stocks of oil there.
