During the troubles (Ireland) a young artillery officer in Cork had attracted the attention of the provost authorities because of his energy and firmness. He was Lieutenant A P Green, late to become the well-loved and efficient APM of Belfast in the Second World War and to complete his provost service as Deputy Provost Marshal in Berlin. Second World War: At Home, page 49. The sudden arrival of American troops in Northern Ireland set the police there the biggest problem they had yet had to tackle - a vast disembarkation of troops in the comparatively small port of Belfast. However, all went well largely owing to the energy and ability of Major A P Green, APM Belfast. Extract from the Northern Whig, 18/1/46. City Man is New Deputy Provost Marshal, Berlin. The new Deputy Provost Marshal in the British sector of Berlin is a Belfast man, Lieut-Colonel A P Green OBE, formerly Deputy Provost Marshal, Northern Ireland District and a well known figure in Army circles here. He was selected for the position a month ago, and took up duty last week. Born in India, he was educated at the Royal Military Academy Woolwich and has spent his entire career in the Army like his father and grandfather before him. He served during the war of 1914-18 with the Royal Field Artillery and was commissioned on the field. He was transferred to the Corps of Military Police. Colonel Green received the MBE in 1943 for his services during the air raids in Belfast. His wife resides at Upper Kings Road, Knock, Belfast. Their only son Mr Neville Green was killed in a motor accident in 1940. |
