| Citation: | BEF. Citation for MID: Security Officer 51 Division. At the passage of the River SEINE at CAUDEBEC on 10 June 40, by his clear headedness and personal efforts, organised and maintained a fire-break between the burning mass of vehicles and buildings and the ferry approaches. As soon as he succeeded in clearing a space it was filled again by French military transport acting independently and without control. Lt. GRAY, nevertheless, continued again and again to clear the space and effectively prevented the fire from reaching petrol tank lorries and ammunition wagons. Only when all British transport except the 14 R.A.S.C. lorries for which there were no drivers, had been evacuated did he leave the place.Recommended for Military Cross, awarded MID. Brigadier A L Kent-Lemon, Major-General A.B. Beauman Comdg Beauman Division. National Archive WO 373/89. |
