Citation: | New Year Honours. 24246895 Corporal Kevin Brian Hicks, 227 Pro Coy. RMP. Village Policeman Pergamos, Cyprus. 14 July 1981 - 20 July 83.Citation: Pergamos is a small, enclosed and islolated military camp within the Eastern Sovereign Base Area, and close to the Turkish Federal State border. It mainly consists of the Cyprus Joint Services Adventure Training Centre, a Primary School and Married Accommondation for both military and UK Based Civilian families. An unusually high rate of thefts, disturbances etc resulted in the need for a permanent police presence. Cpl Hicks volunteered for the post. The job required him to work very long and unsocial hours, and to be constantly on call. In addition he had to be trained as a dog handler as he has a police dog to assist him in his duties. Cpl Hicks is an extremely smart, firm yet fair policeman, with a strong sense of commitment to the community he serves. By his unstinting efforts, and by working long hours, he has virtually stopped all crime in the camp, and by his endeavours has maintained and enhanced the high reputation of his Corps. His work in community relations has been beyond that which one would expect of his tank and service. Large numbers of children, including Cypriots, have benefitted from his Cycling Proficiency Courses which he instigated himself, manufacturing the majority of his aids in his own spare time. He helps to run the school soccer team, and the teenagers have responded well to the 'ad hoc' schemes he has organised for them, which he designs to test their physical and mental prowess. Through his efforts, teenage crime is now virtually non existent in the camp. His intimate knowledge of the people and area has prevented many serious situations arising and he has been able to advise the welfare authorities on domestic problems before they have got out of hand. his firm and fair manner of dealing with problems and people has led him to be well respected by the community (including the Greek and Turkish Cypriots in the area). who have placed absolute trust in him, and who often turn to him for advice and assistance. Through his total dedication to duty, by devoting countless hours of his spare time to helping other people and by his splendid example, Cpl Hicks has played a vital role in the lives of the community.Recommended by: Maj.
