Citation: 202 Pro Coy. Greek Mutiny Egypt. Citation for BEM: This NCO was doing duty at the FPC Ikingi, which was being used as a first reception cage for the mutinous Greek Brigade personnel, with ten junior CMP NCOs under him. 4,000 mutineers were received and caged between 1130 hrs and 1600hrs on the day the Bde. surrendered and in addition, 1,500 loyalists were sorted, segregated and removed to another camp by 2000hrs on the same day. Sgt Meaking worked the whole day without respite and by his extraordinary display of discipline, tact and patience, contributed in no small way to the successful handling of a situation which at times assumed very ugly proportions. During the seven days the mutineers remained in the FPC, this NCO, by his appreciation of the situation and tactful handling of the Greeks, succeeded in not only ensuring a complete freedom from incident between the various factions in th camp, but also disciplined them to the extent of organising them into their original units, providing their own working and fatigue parties and preparing their compounds daily for inspection by the Camp Commander. Having regard to the attitude of the mutineers on arrival at the camp after surrendering the work of this Sergeant deserves the highest praise. He also provided valuable assistance in the identification and segregation of the leader of the mutiny Pte ANDRIOTES.Lt Col H N Whiehead MBE DPM 16 Area. Lieut Gen R G Stone GOC BTE.
