Citation: New Year Honours. 24091296 Staff Sergeant David Easton, RMP. Uganda. For close protection work in Kampala Uganda. NCO 1/c RMP Close Protection Team attached to British High Commission, Kampala. 4 June to 10 December 1984.Citation: Sergeant Easton has led his RMP Close Protection Team of four NCO's with distinction in a difficult environment, without the benefit of a normal military infrastructure to provide immediate support. By his personal example, excellent leadership and energy he kept the professional skills of his team at a high lever of alertness over a sustained period. Similarly by displaying initiative and imagination his weapons, radio and other equipment were maintained fully operational throughout their tour of duty to the highest standard without recourse to normal maintenance facilities. He established and maintained high morale among his men, and excellent relationships between his team, the British High Commission, the British community and those Ugandan individuals and organisations with whom they had to work. In consequence, during a period when there were many incidents by day and night which threatened, or appeared to threaten the safety of the High Commissioner of his staff, the team invariably too prompt and effective action. The systems and drills they had evolved and practised against such eventualities worked impeccably. Led from the front by Sergeant Easton they displayed courage in repeatedly turned out without hesitation to respond to requests for assistance. When fired upon, as happened on four occasions, they reacted with discipline, observing the rules of engagement, and returning fire only during one incident when this became necessary. The admirable performance of the team during this six month tour of duty was in the best traditions of the Service and reflects great credit on the leadership displayed by Sergeant Easton which was well beyond the call of duty. HM High Commissioner for Uganda believes formal recognition is merited and has requested that this citation be submitted.Recommended by: Col. Commandant RMP Training Centre. Brig. PM (Army). Gen.
