Extract from the Buckinghamshire Herald, 1/3/46. POLICE PERSONALITIES. PC HERBERT'S INTERESTING WAR RECORD.
PC Walter Herbert, who is now back with the County Force, and stationed at Aylesbury, has an interesting war record. As Major Herbert, Assistant Provost Marshal, Special Investigation Branch, Persia, he shared the responsibility for the safety of the Big Three when they met at the Tehran conference at the end of 1943. A former Grenadier Guardsman, PC Herbert re-joined the Guards in December, and transferred to the Corps of Military Police in 1940. He served in France and was evacuated just after Dunkirk. He joined the Special Investigation Branch when it was first formed by 18 Scotland Yard Police Officers, including the later Clarence Campion, formerly a well known Superintendent at Scotland Yard, who was killed during the war. He was commissioned in Northern Ireland and was second in command of SIB, Northern Ireland. PC Herbert was posted to Paiforce in 1943, and went to Tehran in the first convoy to pass through the recently liberated Mediterranean. theer he took over as DAPM, SIB, Tehran Sub-Area, and later received his majority and became APM, SIB, for the whole of Persia. The most interesting of his varied experiences in this appointment was the conference between Mr Churchill, President Roosevelt and Marshal Stalin, when PC Herbert was concerned in the police and security arrangements. Mr Churchill also celebrated his 69th birthday at the Tehran British Embassy. As APM he worked in co-operation with the Russian, American and Persian authorities, and came in frequent contact with the Shah of Persia. He investigated many murders and other crimes of violence, and was concerned in the recovery of a million pounds worth of bullion which had been stolen. P C Herbert also witnessed one of the infrequent public hangings carried out in Persia. He was the last Provost Officer to leave the country.
