PC J Hetherington promoted to Sgt. He was awarded the W H Smith cup for the most gentlemanly and courageous act of the year when he received a special commendation from the Chief Constable of Lancashire for stopping a runaway horse, thereby preventing a serious accident. He has had considerable experience with the police mot patrol service.
Joining the Force in 1938, Sergeant Hetherington served in the Scots Guards and Corps of Military Police from 1939 to 1945. Since its formation in 1948 he as served with the police motorcycle patrol.
