Number shown as 180659 in this LG. Lieut. Dennis Bossey Rendell (180657) 2 Parachute Bn., AAC, 1 Airborne Division.Citation: After attempting for five days to reach Allied lines, Lieut. RENDELL was captured near TUNIS on 4 Dec 42 and was imprisoned at CHIETI (Camp 21). Whilst in transit at CAPUA in Dec 42, he tried to walk out of camp wearing a combination of civilian and Italian clothes, but was turned back at the gate. Because of the order given by the senior British Officer, he did not try to leave CHIETI after the Armistice, but was transferred to SULMONA. With the assistance of another officer he succeeded in hiding in a ration truck and thus escaped. When he had taken refuge with friendly Italians in SULMON|A for a few days, he realised that there were many P/W hiding in the vicinity. As Senior Officer he enlisted the help of other officers and formed an organisation for the benefit of all escapers and, before the organisation was broken up by German activity early in Dec 43, over 200 P/W were being cared for. After reaching ROME Lieut. RENDELL was employed in a minor capacity by the larger organisation and in spite of may alarms remained free until the Allies arrived at the beginning of Jun 44.Recommended by Department of Military Intellignece. |
