Decoration: Military Medal (London Gazette: 36850 Page: 5853 Dec. 21, 1944)
Citation: Military Medal Citation. In ITALY on the 5 March 1944 about 1600 hrs this NCO was in charge of the Provost Section policing 'SKIPTON DUMP' when an ambulance from 185 Field Ambulance was secured to give medical attention to a civilian girl who had been wounded. At 16.55 hrs this NCO was assisting the driver to remove the girl from a house near the dump when 6 or 7 enemy shells dropped within the immediate vicinity of the dump wounding the driver 10672022 Bann 185 Field Ambulance, and also Captain Spide-Sproof of 359 Mulepack Coy, the latter seriously. Coloured mule drivers were killed and wounded and a slight panic broke out with the mules becoming frightened. This NCO collected the wounded, got them into ambulances, restored order and discipline among the mule drivers and had the roadway cleared of dead mules, despite the fact that shells were still falling near the dump. Although not having driven an ambulance previously, this NCO drove an ambulance of wounded to 185 ADS(advanced dressing station) where his action was very favourably commented upon by the OC and Medical Officer. On many other occasions while 'PATELY BRIDGE' across the river Garigliano was under shellfire this NCO by his own example of coolness and appreciation of the situation, displayed courage without regard for his personal safety and was an inspiration to junior NCO's.Recommended for MM by Captain T P Noon OC 46 Div Pro Coy CMP.
