Friends in Codnor, Langley mill and district will be sorry to learn that Corpl. Charles Carter of the Military Police is reported missing. Corp. Carter was stationed as police constable at Codnor until the outbreak of war, and was subsequently transferred to the Military Police being drafted to France in December. He has been a member of the Derbyshire Constabulary for some years, being previously stationed at Shirebrook, Sandiacre and Langley Mill. He is 31 years of age, and a native of Shirelaud, having been a member of Shireland St. Paul's Sunday School and Choir. Mrs Carter is now living with her parents at Carr Wood Farm, Brackenfield. Extract from the Derbyshire Times and Chesterfield Herald, 7/11/41. ESCAPED FROM ENEMY WAR CAMP. Former Derbyshire Policeman. Cpl Chas. Carter of the Military police son of Mr and Mrs C Carter, Shirland has been at home this week on leave. As previously reported in the Derbyshire Times, Cpl. Carter was first stated to be missing in France, and later it was reported that he was a prisoner of war. Cpl Carter managed to escape and eventually reached this country. Before joining the Forces he was a police constable and was stationed at Codnor, when he was called to the Colours as an ex-Serviceman. His wife, before her marriage was Miss Frances Richardson of Brakenfield. |
