A letter in his army record reads; Sir, I have the honour to report that at about 6.30 pm 2nd March, I was informed that a serious accident had occurred near Milford Station. I immediately proceeded there, accompanied by Captain Baker of the 179th RA and Dr. Durrant. I found Corpl. Hawkins laying on the path approaching the Railway Station. He appeared to have met with a very serious accident. He was unable to give any details, but I gathered from Driver Brown, also of 179th BAC (Brigade Ammo Column), that the horses got out of control with the result that he (Brown) broke his leg, as did Corpl Hawkins and another Driver of the 179th BAC, all of whom are at present at Bramshott hospital. There was no one present who witnessed the affair as the 174th Brigade, whom these men were with , had en-trained, There is, I am afraid no individual who could throw any further light upon the subject, beyond, perhaps, Driver Brown, but I don't think that he saw the Corporal. A PC of the Surrey Police under Supt. Jennings of Godalming, came on the scene but could only say what he had heard. Signed J E Broadhurst. 2/Lt, 41 Div Ammo Column. Cpl Hawkins broke his thigh trying to stop the horses and was later unable to ride a horse and transferred to the MFP. He was serving with 39 Division at Witley 4/4/16 and later 631 Protection Coy, Royal Defence Corps in Western Command. Info from Pension Index Card:- 30341.
