War Diary WO 95/409 4 Dismounted Traffic Control Unit, MFP. 7/9/17 Report sent to GHQ requesting an immediate award of the Military Medal to Cpl's Diffley & Pollard and Pte Scott for gallantry and devotion to duty at Coxyde on the night 5 Sept 1917. 13/9/17 Acting under the authority of F M C in C delegated to Army Commander 4 Army the Military Medal is awarded to P/2014 Cpl Diffley J, P/1267 Cpl M J Pollard, 6726 Pte A Scott of this unit. The particulars of these acts of gallantry and devotion to duty are as follows: At Coxyde on 5 Sept 1917 Pte A Scott was on duty at cross roads when his post was being heavily shelled, one shell throwing the roof of a house onto his post and telephone wires were also cut and being actually entangled round the soldiers legs. He assisted to collect the debris and the wires, at the same time as directing and controlling traffic. During this period the horse in an ambulance bolted and he assisted in stopping it. Shelling was continuous during the whole period on the same occasion Cpl's Diffley & Pollard came to Pte Scott's assistance voluntarily and they assisted him in clearing up the debris, collecting the wire and stopping the runaway horse. |
