Mr Edward Ellis, local chief inspector for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, died on Monday. Mr Ellis who was 59, resided at 92, Tilehurst Road, Reading. He had served the RSPCA with distinction for 30 years. Previous to taking up his work for the society he was in the police force, and was stationed at Dover. He was a native of Tunbridge Wells, and during the last war he served for three and a half years as a sergeant in the Military Foot Police. Mr Ellis was the holder of a life-saving certificate, signed by his late Majesty King George V, and awarded for his gallantry in saving a soldier from drowning. His RSPCA work was much appreciated by animal lovers in the district, and he also rendered valuable service as a member of the Reading Veterinary ARP Corps. He was on honorary sanitary inspector for certain part of Berkshire. He leaves a widow, one son and two daughters.
