Citation: George Medal Citation 2609338 WOI (RSM) H S NOBLE CORPS OF MILITARY POLICEBurmaOn the 13th May 1944, in Burma, shots were heard coming from the direction of a Line of Communication signal lines. Shortly after, a message was received to the effect that a man had run amok with a rifle and ammunition and was firing at everybody and everything. Sergeant-Major Noble went over to the signal lines armed with a Tommy gun, meeting an officer on the way who showed him the location of the man who had run amok, who it appeared had got into a Quartermaster's store, as shots were coming from the store rather rapidly. After about half an hour of manoeuvre and during which time firing was continuous, Sergeant-Major Noble and a number of others closely surrounded the store, where about 1700 rounds of ammunition and a dozen or so rifles were stored. Sergeant-Major Noble, who was covering the only doorway waited for a chance to fire at the man inside in order to disable him; the chance arrived, and on attempting to fire, he found that his Tommy gun had become jammed. Showing great presence of mind and total disregard for personal danger, Sergeant-Major Noble rushed into the store, disarmed the man and after a short struggle held him securely to the floor. Sergeant-Major Noble said afterwards that when he got inside the store he found it to be darker than outside, and that he was unable to see, but after stumbling about, suddenly felt somebody on the floor, so he jumped on him.
