Citation: New Year Honour. Camp Terendak Area, NCO 1/c Military Police Detachment. June 1960 onwards.Citation: During this period Cpl (A/Sgt) Jones has been in charge of an integrated British and commonwealth Military Police detachment responsible for the discipline of the Commonwealth Brigade units stationed in Camp Terendak. The Commonwealth Brigade Provost Unit is still in North Malaya and is commanded by a Major. Pending their arrival an "ad hoc" unit has been formed to carry out their task until the move south is complete. Sgt Jones as NCO i/c this detachment has had to bear the brunt of a difficult situation and frequently deal with tasks which would normally be dealt with by an officer. he has performed these duties in an outstanding manner. Malacca city adjacent to the Cantonment has in the past been unused to large numbers of British/Commonwealth soldiers. During the period of Sgt Jones command there have been three major units and numerous minor all dependant on Malacca for their recreation. The city is a hot bed of gangsters, vice and disease. Secret Societies flourish; the pitfalls for the unwary soldier are numerous. Further there is a strong political element which would welcome and incident likely to bring discredit on HM Forces. Due to the untiring efforts of this NCO good relations have been preserved with the civil population and there have been no major incidents between soldiers and local rowdies. Extremely good liaison has been preserved with the Civil Police. The British Officer Commanding the City Police Force with whom Jones has had to liaise has commended him on numerous occasions and favourable comments have frequently been passed to senior officers of this Headquarter. The sudden impact of a large military population has greatly added to the difficulties of Malacca's traffic problem. This has required considerable research and co-operation between the Civil and Military Police. The selection and marking of military routes and the implementation of a WD traffic plan has all contributed considerably towards accident prevention. Sgt Jones has been largely instrumental in achieving this state of affairs. To summarise. During his tour in Malacca this NCP has been solely responsible for the following:-(a) The maintenance of discipline in the Cantonment and Malacca City.(b) The prevention of crime and enforcement of 'out of bounds' areas. The protection of soldiers from local hazards.(c) Liaison with Civil Police and local civil government departments.(d) Maintenance of a joint Civil and Military Police traffic plan.(e) Liaison with the support of the garrison Commander and other commanding officers. A duty which he has performed with tact and understanding. It is considered that the bearing in mind his age and rank the calibre of Sgt Jones performance is such as to warrant recognition, particularly as these duties would normally be carried out by an officer.Recommended by: Maj.
