Citation: Queens Birthday Honours. 23235757 S/Sgt. John James Collins, RMP. 247 (Berlin) Pro Coy, RMP. 29 Dec 1966 to 31 Dec 1969. S/NCO i/c at Autobahn Control Det.Citation: S/Sgt Collins has been the senior Military Police NCO at the Autobahn Control Detachment Helmstedt since August 1966. During this period and especially during the last nine months he has performed his duties with such loyalty and devotion as to become an inspiration to his comrades. By his selfless example and careful attention to the administration of his isolated detachment he has been responsible for the maintenance of high morale under difficult conditions. He has achieved this through hard and long hours of work over and above those normally to be expected fro a person of his rank and position. During the absence of his OIC detachment he has cheerfully accepted the added responsibility involving decisions of international importance, the maintenance of harmonious relations with allied Forces and personal dealings with Soviet officials. In March 1949 there was a Berlin crisis, which caused intense activity over a ten-day period within the Autobahn Control Detachment. S/Sgt Collins was responsible for mounting, briefing and supervising increased Autobahn Patrols, and the transmission of minute to minute situation reports to HQ Berlin and HQ BAOR. In addition he was also responsible for the provision of facilities for representatives of the World Press, and the fostering of good Public Relations. Above all, he was firm, good humoured and tactful in all his dealings with the Soviets throughout this serious confrontation. He has responded willingly to calls for his services and has unhesitatingly held himself available throughout the twenty four hours. He has brought credit to his branch of the service and to his Nation. His quid decisions and resourceful actions have materially enhanced the safety and well being of allied travellers along the autobahn from Helmstedt to Berlin. By a display of personality, leadership, tact, firmness and unhesitating service often in adverse climatic conditions, he has made an important contribution far above that to be expected from his rank and service, towards the moral, welfare and efficiency of those under his command, and provided a vital and valued service to the Allied Forces in a post of great sensitivity.Recommend by: Maj. OC 247 (Berlin) Pro Coy. Brig. Berlin Brigade, Maj/Gen. HQ Berlin. Gen. C in C, HQ BAOR.
