Citation: Military Medal Citation.Escape and evasion ItalyREDHEAD was captured on 29 Jun 42 near FUKA and was sent to a working camp at CICCIANO attached to Camp 82 (LATERINA).During the afternoon of 11 Sep 43 the whole of the P/W in this working camp went into the nearby mountains, where REDHEAD remained until he was recaptured by Fascists. Taken to FORTRESSA DI BASSO, he found six other P/W already there, and , under cover of loud singing they removed the mortar of the brick wall of their cell. When this was completed five days later, they got out of the cell and negotiated the outer wall by climbing on to the roof of an adjoining building and letting themselves down the other side by means of a rope made from a blanket. With three others, REDHEAD then went into the mountains and joined a rebel band at CAMERINO. On 15 Mar 44 REDHEAD was again arrested and taken to MACERATA Civil Goal, but six weeks captivity was terminated when the 13 P/W overcame their five guards during an air raid alarm.Remaining hidden in the vicinity of FERMO, REDHEAD was included in an evacuation scheme organised by 'A' Force, and reached TERMOLI on 25 May 44.Citation ref WO 373/96ESCAPES FROM CAMP 82 (LATERINA), ITALYRECOMMENDATIONS FOR AWARDS(1) After the Armistice with Italy had been signed the Senior British Officer of the camp advised P/W to remain there, but did not actively prevent their escaping. There was a mass breakout by some French Foreign Legion troops, who were fired on by Italian guards, and a certain number of British P/W escaped during the confusion. The majority, however, remained in camp and were captured by the Germans when they took over.A number of sub-working camps were attached to Camp 82 and most of the P/W in them seem to have had little difficulty in getting away after the Armistice.(2) I recommend the following other ranks for the awards shown, brief particulars being given in the enclosures stated opposite their names:-(a) Recommended for M.M.3130602 Cpl BURGESS, Harry 1Bn.
