Decoration Record:
Decoration: Member of the British Empire (London Gazette: 42870 Page: 8 Jan. 1, 1963)
Citation: New Year Honour. Major Herbert Robert Sawyer (170305) DAPM 50 Div/Dist Pro Coy, RMP. Territorial Army. 1 Nov 58 - May 62.Citation: Major SAWYER is no the Deputy Assistant Provost Marshal of 50 Infantry Division, TA. After nine years service in the ranks of the Regular Army, Major SAWYER was commissioned into the Royal Armoured Corps in 1941. Three years alter, he was seconded to the Royal Military Police with which Corps he continued to serve until 1956, a total of 24 years service. In the autumn of 1956, he joined the Territorial Army and assumed command of 50 Infantry Division Provost Company two years later. This Company was located in Detachments at HULL, SCARBOROUGH, DARLINGTON and NEWCASTLE. Due to his unrelenting energy, keenness and enthusiasm, Major SAWYER was instrumental in welding these widely dispersed detachments into a most efficient unit with high morale and pride of unit. On the reorganisation of the Territorial Army in 1961 his command was split into two new units, one in YORKSHIRE and the other in the TYNE/TEES Area. The latter was constituted as the new 50 Division/District Provost Company and the former was designated as a GHQ unit. Major SAWYER lives in the East Riding of Yorkshire but with commendable loyalty to 50 Infantry Division TA, he resigned the command of his Company and was re-appointed as DAPM of the Division. At great inconvenience to himself, since long travelling distances and hours of work were involved he has devoted his efforts to ensure that the newly formed 50 Division/District Provost Company reached the same high standard, both technically and administratively, as his old unit. He has achieved his object in a very short space of time notwithstanding the fact that none of his officers had previously been trained in Military Police work Major SAWYER in an outstanding example of a Territorial Army Officer who devotes all his spare time to his duties in the Territorial Army and has, by outstanding leadership, example, energy, enthusiasm brought the Provost of 50 Infantry Division to its present high state of efficiency.Recommended by Col. A Q 50 Div/Dist. GOC Northumberland District, GOC Northern Command.
