Citation: Military Medal Citation.BEF France and FlandersAt about 1900 hours 20 May 1940 Lance Corporal Crane on a motorcycle was attempting to join the train he was with after having made a reconnaissance east of ABBEVILLE at 1930 hours. On turning a corner he ran into a German mechanised column and was captured. He was taken with 6 other prisoners and marched back. He lagged behind the remainder and as soon as it was dusk made off in the direction of the coast. During 21 May in company with a Belgian soldier Crane made his way to FORT St MAHON where they obtained a canoe and during the night of 21/22nd travelled down the coast arriving at CAEUX (on coast near St VALERY) in the morning and walked to DIEPPE, arriving on the 23rd, where he reported to the DAPM.Awarded the MM.
