During the period June 1956 to the present date this NCO has carried out his duties in an exemplary manner and for considerable periods he has commanded the detachment in the absence of an officer. On the 5th April 1958 during a disturbance in Hero's Square, Limassol, when several hundred servicemen became involved in a brawl with Greek Cypriots who were throwing bottles and other missiles at them. Sjt Jones was personally responsible for dispersing a large and hostile crowd on Cypriots by arresting the ring leader in their midst. In addition he ordered all the servicemen to disperse to their units and to drop any potential missiles they possessed, both of which they did. By his prompt and resolute action this NCO prevented what might have been a very ugly situation. During June and July 1958 this NCO was continually working duty during the inter-communal troubles in Limassol town working with the civil police. By his selfless devotion to duty over exceptionally long hours he set a fine example to his detachment. Through his untiring energy, organising ability, cheerfulness and personal courage he was responsible by day and night for very excellent work done by the detachment in conjunction with the military and police authorities.Recommended for the BEM by Lt Col R A St G Martin, MBE, I S Area Commandant, Limassol, Col J H Allford Polemidhia Camp and GOC Cyprus, Nicosia.
