How a Wilts football referee and former Chippenham Town footballerr Capt A A Howlett of the 4th Coy, CMP, TC whose wife resides at Yewstock Crescent, Chippenham met Prince Bernard of Holland is described in a letter received Mr Frederick Evans of Chippenham sportsman. Capt Howlett writes "I am with another Company just in Holland over the German border. I am attached to the Canadian Army and find life fairly interesting. The second day I was here I was on a case that caught the interest of Prince Bernard and I was asked if I would go an see him at the palace at 6pm, to with my DPM's permission I went with the CSM to the palace. Of course we were all dressed up. When we got there we were admitted to the Princes secretariat and were told by the secretary that the Prince was not in. However a small plane passed over and we were informed that it might be the Prince. SHIRT SLEEVE ORDER. A few moments later the Prince rushed in giving us not time to perform. He first apologized for being late and then asked me if I would pardon his dress as he was in "shirt sleeve order." He took the wind out of my sails there and then and after our business was done again and I departed. He then stated that he has registered with the Wiltshire Football Association. Capt. Howlett says that he is doubtful whether he will be home this year, but that he expects leave in August. |
