Extract from the Peterborough Standard 29 October 1937. ANOTHER CITY SERGEANT RETIRES. PS AMOS SUMMERLIN, COMMENDED BY JUSTICES SEVEN TIMES. With the retirement of police sergeant Amos Thomas, Summerlin on Wednesday, the City Police Force has lost the services of one of the most popular and efficient officers. He lives at 167 Mayor's Walk, which will continue to be his home. Sergt. Summerlin joined the Northants County Police on Sept. 27th 1909 and was transferred to the Liberty Force on March 1st, 1910. At both stations he was under Chief Constable J D Kellie MacCullam, who at the time was Chief Constable both of Northants and the Liberty Force. Mr Summerlin was transferred to the City Force on October 13th 1910, and has remained there ever since, but for his war service. He enlisted in the Army on January 11th `9`7 and served in France with the rank of Lance Corporal and in the Military Foot Police. He was commended by the Havre Commissioner of Police for rescuing a gendarme when he was being stoned by a crowd of hooligans outside a ship building yard. But for his timely and gallant act the man would very probably have been killed. On January 30th, 1919 he was released from the army and returned to the police force, being promoted to sergeant in February of the same year. Sergt. Summerlin has been awarded the Jubilee Medal. Seven times Mr Summerlin has bee commended magisterially for smart police work for arrests at Cambridge, West Riding and Biggleswade and the rest of Peterborough, In addition to the commendation, on one occasion he received and advance of class of pay, and for the Biggleswade case he was awarded the Merit Badge. |
