Decoration Record:
Decoration: Order of the British Empire (London Gazette: 40000 Page: 5771 Oct. 27, 1953)
Citation: Malaya 1/1/1953 - 30/6/1953. OC Singapore Guard Regt then part of RMP. Wiltshire Regt. Jul 52 - Jun 53. Citation for OBE: Lt-Col C F READ took over command of the SINGAPORE GD REGT (RMP), a Malayan Unit, in Jul 52. In less than a year Lt-Col READ, by his outstanding example, devotion to duty, and an exceptional display of personal leadership, has transformed the unit into the most efficient and contended in the District. This fine achievement was accomplished in the face of most adverse circumstances in British personnel, material, unit accommodation and a heavy guard commitment. Quite apart from producing an efficient and happy unit in such a short time, his personal attention to all and every detail of management of Malays, his care for their individual welfare, and the cheerful and determined way in which he personally first mastered the Malay language then associated himself with Malay customs, and thus brought out the best qualities in the race of which his unit is composed, has set a standard almost without parallel in this District. An example which has been an inspiration to other Commanders and staff who are faced with the general problems of Malayanization of the Army in the Colony. For this outstanding achievement, example and devotion to duty, I consider that Lt-Col READ is worthy of the highest award.Brig E J Montgomery CB, CBE Brig IC Adm Singapore Base District.
