Extract from the Ballymena Weekly Telegraph, 11/1/1952. Awarded BEM in Canal Zone.
After having been recently evacuated from the Canal Zone by air, Mrs Kernaghan, of Ferry Road, Islandmagee, has received news that her husband, Sergt T H Kernaghan, Royal Military Police, at present stationed in the Canal Zone, has been awarded the British Empire Medal.
Sergt Kernaghan joined the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers in 1934, and also served in the Royal Irish Fusiliers before being transferred to the Royal Military Police.
Mrs Kernaghan, who had been with her husband in the Canal Zone for nearly two years, was living in Ismalia in October, when the riots started, and had to barricade herself and her three year old son in the top room of a block of flats while rioting and looting went on all around.

The whole of the year 1950 was a very difficult one for the Company, owing to frequent changes of officers and senior NCOs.
