Citation: Italy. Citation for BEM: CQMS Cook has been Chief Clerk Provost Branch, HQ Eighth Army, since August 1943, throughout the entire Italian Campaign, and previously served as a Divisional Provost Coy Clerk in the Western Desert. During the time he has been at Army Headquarters he has been responsible for the organisation of all clerical duties and of the interior economy of this branch. It must now be said that never during the whole of this period of one year and nine months has the efficiency and excellence of the clerical work of the branch been of anything but the very highest standard. At all times frequently in the worst of field conditions, the clerical staff has displayed not only a high standard of work, but also the cheerfulness, application and ability for sustained effort which is so necessary for efficiency. This teamwork, while of necessity a combined effort on the part of all ranks, was largely due to the untiring personal efforts and leadership of CQMS Cook. The work he has handled both of the most secret operational nature and of a highly confidential type concerning the discipline of officers and men, has demanded a standard of integrity and trusworthiness second to none. All this and more CQMS Cook has cheerfully and unstintingly supplied, and by this, together with his loyalty, he has been not just an efficient chief clerk, but an invaluable assistant and friend to all the Provost Staff Officers who have served at Army Headquarters. For his continued good service, a lot of it beyond the call of ordinary duty, it is strongly recommended that he receive recongnition in the form of the British Empire Medal.Lt-Col J R Archer-Burton OBE, DPM Eight Army.
