The promotion of Inspector E M Savage to the rank of Superintendent was announced at the same time as that of Superintendent Brett. The new Superintendent, who has been stationed at Chichester for more than ten years, and has gained his promotions during that time, went to Arundel on Friday to take charge of the Arundel Division, in succession to ex Supt. Peel. The rumour that he had been promoted Superintendent was then premature, but the official announcement of his appointment followed quickly on his removal. An officer of undoubted ability, Supt. Savage has well merited the confidence of the police authorities, and he also enjoys the full confidences of the law abiding public. Those who have not been law-abiding have found in him one capable of visiting them with swift retaliation, but even these have found him to be a warm hearted friend as well as an officer with whom the call of duty has always been the first consideration. Mr Savage joined the Force on March 29, 1914, then being stationed at Horsham. He joined the Army in 1915, serving during the war in the Military Foot Police in France. Incidentally he acquired a knowledge of French during his service, which has been of value in his police work on more than one occasion. Rejoining the West Sussex Force in September, 1919 he did duty at Southwick, Storrington and West Chiltington before being sent to Chichester. He became sergeant on December 19, 1923, and has only been serving as inspector since January 1 of this year. |
