PLUCKY ACT RECALLED. Southampton Constable's Retirement.
More than 28 years police service in the Surrey Constabulary, the Military Foot Police and the Southampton Borough Police - was completed by Police Constable Albert John Tubb, on Thursday when he retired from the Southampton Force.
PC Tubb joined the Southampton force in March 1913.
He had not been in the Southampton Force long when he distinguished himself ty stopping a runaway horse in Shirley. The incident happened on the day of the official opening of the Shirley fire station. Shortly before the ceremony, a horse attached to a two wheeled cart bolted along Shirley road towards the crowd gathering outside the station. The driver was thrown out of the cart.
PC Tubb, who was regulating traffic outside the station, acted promptly. Running beside the frightened horse, he seized the animals head and after being dragged about 20 years, brought it to a standstill.
His plucky action was recongnized by a commendation from the Watch Committee and the award of a gratuity.
