Charles William Henry Reeves. Extract from the Daily Herald 1 August 1924. SOLDIER'S RICH BRIDE. Bigamy Charge Follows War Romance in Holland. Charles William Henry Reeves (31) and ex-soldier of the Military Foot Police was remanded, at Aldershot yesterday, on a charge of bigamously marry8ing Helene Elsabe Bornholdt, of Rotterdam, a woman of means. It was stated that Reeves married his real wife in Ireland in 1914. While a prisoner of war in Holland he met the Dutch woman and married her before the Dutch mayor and the British Consul on April 16, 1919. The Dutch woman set him up in business and they were happy together for five years until Reeves deserted when he should have returned to England. A military charge of desertion was preferred against him and he completed 54 days detention on Wednesday. The Dutch woman had followed him to England and learnt of the Irish Marriage from Reeve's sister in Guildford. |
