He was already in the army at the outbreak of war and in August 1914 was sent to the Western Front where he saw much active service on various sectors. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal in September 1919 for the exceptionally good work during the war and also holds the 1914 Star and the General Service and Victory Medals. In November 1919 he was discharged.
