His name is spelt Marchmont on medal index card and Marchment in newspaper report. Extract from the Bournemouth Guardian 1 February 1919. Meritorious Service Medal. The Meritorious Service Medal has bee conferred upon Corporal William Alfred Marchment of Branscome, Dorset who has been serving in Palestine with the Military Mounted Police attached to the 4th Cavalry Division, Divisional Headquarters. The award is made for gallantry and devotion to duty under shell and rifle fire in the Jordan valley. Corporal Marchment, who served with the 14th Hussars during the So8uth African War, offered his services to his old regiment in August, 1914, but was rejected as medically unfit. A few month's late he tried to join the City of London Yeomanry, but was again refected and later, having entered the army under the derby scheme, he was posted to the 18th (Queen Mary's Own) Hussars. In 1917 he went to Palestine with the Warwick Yeomanry, taking part with the in all engagements; was afterwards attached to the Australian Light Horse and was eventually transferred to the Military Mounted Police. Corporal Marchment is the eldest son of the late Mr. William Marchment, of Hammersmith and Isleworth and resided with his wife at Branksome for some years before joining the Army. |
