Extract from the Eastbourne Gazette 6 August 1941. FIFTY YEARS AGO - LETTER FROM SALONICA. Corporal Alfred T Kent of the Military Mounted Police, formerly a member of the Hove Police Force, writing from Salonika to his parents (Mr & Mrs W T Kent), of North Street, Eastbourne, says "We are right up near the frontier now, but there are not signs of the enemy. I don's think there will be much fighting here. We have to wait and see but we are fully prepared for them. "The heat is awful. I have just come back off a five days' trek to Salonica and back; we had to take some prisoners there. There is plenty of fruit, but they charge a lot for it. The Turks rob us all ways - three eggs for ten pence; bread half a crown a loaf. They are making their fortunes out of us Tommies. |
