WH ESCORTED A KING TO RETIREMENT. This is the picturesque record of P.C. Samuel Jones, who, after 26 years' service, is retiring from Leicester City Police Force. He is the last Boer War veteran, The only man never to have had a day's sickness during his service. Leicester's longest serving traffic control policeman. He has been on point duty for 15 years and he has served under five reigns, in five regiments of the British Army and in Two police forces- Leicester City and Lancashire County. Was one of the picked soldiers who accompanied King George V, when Duke of York, to Australia to inaugurate the Commonwealth. When only 18,m P.C. jones joined the King's Shropshire Light Infantry and shortly afterwards transferred to the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles). After a few months' service he was drafted to South Africa, where he served in the Boer Ear with Gough's Mounted Infantry and later the 2nd Mounted Infantry. As one of the escorts to King George V P.C. Jones accompanied him to New South Wales, New Zealand, Tasmania and right into the Maroia district as far as Wanganoia and Rotoroa. As a drummer in the pipe band of the Cameronians he was stationed for some years in India and did duty at Newshera, Meerut and Cawnpore. Leaving the Army, he joined the Lancashire County Constabulary and after about a year's service he became a member of the Leicester force. In the Great War P.C. Jones served with the Military Mounted Police in France and served withy the 6th Division, the 4th Indian Cavalry Division and the 24th Division. He returned to the police force in 1919. He was recently decorated with the Coronation Medal. He holds the Queen's South Africa War medal with four clasps and the General Service and Victory Medals. At the police inspection in Leicester last week, P.C. Jones, and expert horseman, made his last appearance with the mounted squad. |
