Extract from the Rugby Advertiser 28 March 1942. Death of Mr. R. G. Jones - Well Known Ruby Catholic. Catholic circles in Rugby have suffered a severe loss in the death last Friday, at the age of 63, of Mr. Reuben George Jones, 75 Lawford Road, Rugby. Mr. Jones, who for a number of years has carried on business as a wine and spirit merchant in Church Street (previously owned by Mr. W. Flint), had been in poor health for the past twelve months, but the end came rather unexpectedly. During the Boer Ear Mr. Jones served in the 3rd Dragoon Guards and at the outbreak of the last war he again enlisted and served in the Military Mounted Police. He was employed at the B.T.H. Coy. for 23 years and was in the Motor Factory Production Department. He was a member of the Rugby Conservative Club. Apart from his business, Mr. Jones' interests were devoted to St. Marie's Church. he was a member of the Guild of the Blessed Sacrament and was one of those who were primarily responsible for the formation of St. Marie's Ex-Servicemen's Association,m of which he was always a very active member. He took a particular interest in the annual collection at the church for st. Dunstan's and was treasurer for St. Marie's Sick and Dividend Club. it was largely owing to his instigation that St. Marie's Hall was purchased in 1937 as a centre for Catholic Social Life in the town and he was a member of the Council of the Club from the Start. Under his chairmanship of the committee responsible for the debt redemption, the debt on the hall was reduced from £1,650 to just under £100 in five years and he also made the arrangements for the envelope collection scheme for the debt redemption fund. |
