Extract from the Berwickshire News and General Advertiser, 28/8/1917. The first for us to mention is Cpl. Thos. W. Johnson, who is an older soldier, now having been out since the outbreak of hostilities, and having done a considerable amount of soldiering some years previous to that. Cpl Johnson, who is a native of Belford, commenced life as a postman in his native village, his late father also having followed that occupation, and being employed in same office. The gallant corporal after carrying letters for a few years enlisted in 16th Lancers, served a few years in that Regiment and was a reservist when war broke out consequently was called up and sent off to France, 7th Sept. 1914. Quickly after arrival he met the Huns tearing through invaded territory but he and other British heroes after some hard fighting not only checked the advance of the foul murderers but thew them back, proving to them and the whole world, that Britain produced the type of men who would unflinchingly face anything in a struggle for right against might. Sticking in the trenches for many long months without change he was eventually transferred to the Military Police. His wife and little children reside in West Street, Belford and our sincere wish is that the next time he returns to his happy home it may be for good. His younger only brother is in the army too, and has been wounded, and is at present at Alnwick. article has small inset picture of Cpl Johnson in MMP uniform. |
