PLEASANT SURPRISE. - Mounted Constable's Gift from Nottingham Lady in America.
A Nottingham soldier's pleasant surprise is told in a letter received by Mrs. Dunkerley, of 5c, Alberta Terrace, Sherwood Rise, from her husband Corporal Joseph Dunkerley, who until the outbreak of the war was a mounted constable in the Nottingham City Police Force, stationed at Hyson Green and formerly at Carrington.
He says that a short while ago he, in company with many other British soldiers, received a parcel of comforts from friends and sympathisers in America. In his case it was the more welcome because a parcel sent from home had not been delivered to him. Putting on a pair of socks included in the parcel he found a message written on each side of a small piece of paper. On one side it read:- To Tommy Atkins. - May God bless and keep you is the prayer of the maker. - Mrs G. R. Sharp, Wichita, Kansas, U.S.A. On the other the writer added:- I am an Englishwoman who left Nottingham eight years ago.
Dunkerley has asked his wife to write a letter of thanks for Mrs. Sharp, to tell her that by strange coincidence her gift fell into the hands of a Nottingham man.
The ex-police officer encloses the message in his letter, together with a snapshot of himself and another trooper on horseback. He states that he has made friends with a French policeman.
A previous photograph taken at St. Nazaire, accompanied a previous letter. This is not Dunkerleys first experience of war, for he fought through the South African war. He left Nottingham in August as a reservist in the 17 Hussars. He has since attained the rank of Corporal at present attached to the Military Mounted Police.
( the article has a picture of Dunkeley in full police uniform with a helmet with a spike.)
