A letter in his army record from the Pontefract Recruiting Officer to Military Police Aldershot dated 6/5/16 reads: With reference to your No. R.O.414 of the 5th May accepting Roland Jackson for the Military Mounted Police, I beg to inform you that the place of residence of this man is in the centre of an area which is infected with small-pox, and all recruiting from this infected area is stopped. I have therefore warned the man that he is not to move until further orders.
