Extract from the Nottingham Evening Post 27 November 1916. WOMAN FINED £5.
At Grantham to-day Kate Hawbrook, married woman, 49 George Street, was charged with retailing beer without a licence at her house on the 17th inst. Mr. T. Norton, for defendant, pleaded guilty.
Corporal John Hulse, of the Military Mounted Police, said at 9.40pm he visited defendant's kitchen. He called for two glasses of beer and was served by defendant and he paid 4d for them. Five minutes later he again visited the house with the Provost Marshall and he purchased two more glasses beer, for which he paid 4d.
Capt Lousada, the APM, said he had had defendant's house under observation for a considerable time and he had seen men come away from the house in an intoxicated condition.
Mr Norton, in mitigation, said the Military Police had been in the habit of coming to her house for supper. She had served them with supper and they had paid for it, and she had sold the a glass of beer without realising the seriousness of it. She had not made a regular practice of it.
Defendant, on oath, said she had committed the offence in ignorance. The Magistrate imposed a fine of £5.
