Gained Whilst Fighting in France. The intelligence has been received with great satisfaction in Birkenhead that three members of the Borough Police force who are not fighting in France, have gained the Military Medal. These are Sergeant Alfred G Jones, of the Military Foot Police, who untill he "joined up" was associated with Birkenhead's detective department; PC 25B (Walter Taylor), also of the Military Foot Police, who has resided at 416 Beckwith Street, and PC 4A (Harry Walker), of 130, Bentinck Street, 6 Battalion Cheshire Regiment. Details are as yet lacking as to the circumstances under which Taylor an Walker received the coveted award for "gallant services rendered." The latter has been in hospital badly gassed. "n the Case of Sergeant Jones - he holds that position in the "MP" force in France - a few particulars have some to hand. His is a native of Shropshire, and prior to enlistment was engaged in the detective department of the Birkenhead Force and had proved himself a very capable officer. He was recently home on leave from France, after being rather severely wounded and on his return to service he was surprised to find himself called upon to receive the Military medal in respect of excellent services rendered by him in march and April last. He is a married man and had resided in Leta Street. |
