2nd Witness No 1036 Joseph Hawkes, MFP,states: At Richborough on the 17th October 1917, about 6.15 am
I was on duty in the company of Sgt Griffiths, RE on the Richborough Wharf when from information received I went abroad the barge "Malissa" where I saw the accused, he was wearing civilian clothes. I asked him what he was doing there and he replied working. I then told him that I had reason to believe that he was an absentee from the Inland Waterways & Docks RE, he replied that he had been discharged but he had left his discharge papers in London. Not been satisfied with his statement I conducted him to the Depot Guard Detention Room where I handed him over to the NCO I/C of the guard to be detained.
Signed J Hawkes Sgt, MFP.
Joseph Hawkes.
