Extract from the Staffordshire Sentinel 6 November 1939. KEEN HORSEMAN AND SWIMMER. We regret to record the death of Police Sergeant Thomas Flower of the Stoke on Trent City Police Force who, since 1929 was in charge of the Birches Head section. Sergeant Flower was taken ill last Saturday week and was operated on in London Road hospital for appendicitis. Complications set in and he passed away yesterday. He was 51 years of age and leaves a widow and a son, to whom sympathy is extended. He was a native of Stone and joined the Hanley Division in 1910. He was always a keen horseman and was a member of the mounted branch in Hanley before the Great War. He joined up soon after the war started and served throughout with the Military Mounted Police in France. When he was demobilized he went to Loughton, where he served as a constable until 1923, when he was appointed Sergeant at Burslem. SPORT INTERESTS. Police Sergeant Flower remained at Burslem for four years where he made many friends. He took charge of the Birches Head Section in 1929, remaining there until the time of his death. Sergeant Flower was always a keen sportsman. he was a very healthy man, up to the time of his illness and scarcely a day went by without him having his swim in Hanley Baths. He maintained this practice during the coldest weather. He was regarded in police circles as a conscientious and reliable officer who will be greatly missed in the Force. he was a member of the City Police Sports Club Committee. The funeral will take place at Burslem Cemetery at 3.30 on Thursday. |
