He volunteered in June 1915, and in the same year was sent to France, where he served until 1919. Whilst abroad he took part in many important battles, including those of Ypres, Loos, the Somme, Arras, Passchendaele and Cambrai, and also the Retreat and Advance of 1918. He was awarded the DCM for conspicuous gallantry in the Field during 1918, and also holds the 1914-15 Star and the General Service and Victory Medals.
