As I am his father I feel I must tell you he is under age for active service, as he was only 17 years of age last April, I enclose his birth certificate and I think he is too young for active service conditions after so short a stay in France and his youth will not stand it. I consider it would be right to be put on home service until ? of age. I hope you will consider this and I think it will be for the country's benefit, ? you will reply, for which I shall be grateful, Yours truly Beny Crook. A note dated 17/1/1916 from Infantry Records, Shrewsbury states: This youth being 17 years of age will be held to serve. His parents have been notified to that effect and their sons birth certificate return to them. Enclosed correspondence please return after taking note. Maj. for Col. Inf Records, No. 4 District.
