Extract from the Bucks Herald 4 December 1936, DEBT COLLETOR'S FRAUD. Ernest Alfred Cross, of Old Road, Wheatley, who was defended by Mr. Douglas Jenkins, pleaded guilty to charges of fraudulently converting certain sums of money received from people in Aylesbury and neighbourhood and was bound over in the sum of £5 for two years. The charges arose out of Cross's activities as a debt collector. To charges of forging a banker's cheque and obtaining money by means of the cheque he pleaded not guilty and this plea being accepted by the prosecution, the cases were not preceded with. Twelve charges of fraudulent conversion were taken into consideration. P.S. Dore stated that Cross was formerly employed by Messrs. McCorquondale and Co., Ltd., printers, of King Street, London as a clerk, but left of his own accord. From August, 1914 until March 1916, he served with the County of London Yeomanry overseas with the Mediterrane3an Expeditionary Force and in August 1916, he was re-attested and posted to the Military Mounted Police serving in France and Flanders and with the British Army on the Rhine. His army character was given as very good. From September 1918 until December 1931, he carried on business as hunting and riding master at Fingest and Lane End and left the district owing several people money for rent and goods supplied. From 1932 until 1936 he carried on business as a debt collector styled as The Home Counties' Debt Recovery Association and the present charges were matters arising out of that business. When arrested, Cross was a cafe assistant at Wheatley. The total amount of money fraudulently converted according to the charges was £10-19s-11d., and that of outstanding offences amounted to £26-5s-3d. There were no previous convictions against Cross. In all three of the foregoing cases the prosecuting counsel was Mr. T. Fitzwalter Butler. |
