Chris Corby.

Extract from the Sleaford Gazette 16 January 1953.
Small World - Coming off duty as a War Reserve Policeman late one night in 1943, Mr. Chris. Corby, of 6 King Edward Street, Sleaford, found a disconsolate American soldier lean against a wall on Grantham Road. "What's up chum? or words to that effect asked Mr. Corby. The American explained that he had hurt his ankle, had lost his buddies and was lonely. He was from Cranwell and the last bus had gone. Feeling sorry for the soldier, Mr. Corby took him home, gave him supper and made him comfortable for the night. Later, the American was posted to Bournemouth but managed to get in a couple of days leave with Mr. and Mrs. Corby. When he returned to the States they kept up a correspondence.
This pleasant little story arising out of the war had a remarkable sequel a couple of weeks ago when Mr. Corby received a letter from an enthusiastic radio transmitter living in Boston (Lincs.). The amateur, who would rather not have his name mentioned, wrote to Mr, Corby as Follows: "Recently I had a chat with an American radio amateur. I have a transmitting licence so "meet" many people in different parts of the world. This American chap told me that you were an old friend of his during the war. His name is Don. Tl. Meisal, 1616 S. Grange, Sioux Falls, South Dakota. he said would I tell you the family were all well and he would very much like to hear from you. He has recently been serving 21 month in Korea."
Well, there's the story, and the obvious comment is "What a small world!" Mr. Meisal is, of course, Mr. Corby's American Soldier.
Incidentally, Mr Corby spent over 30 years in the Police Force joining at Lincoln in February 1913, retiring on pension in 1938 and rejoining again for the period of the Second Wo4rld War, During the 1914/18 was he served with the Military Mounted Police in France.
