Decoration Record:
Decoration: British Empire Medal (London Gazette: 36180 Page: 4215 Sept. 23, 1943)
Citation: Algeria, Tunisia. Citation for BEM: During the time that this Corps has been engaged in active operations, and owing to its extremely moblie role, P.W. cages have been erected as far forward as possible at EL ALA, FONDOUK, EL AROUSSA, BOU ARADA, FRENDJ, LA MOMAMMEDIA, GROMBALIA and HAMMAM LIF. In almost every case Sgt HOUGHTING has organised these cages from the beginning, usually with a scratch team and often without many of the materials essential for constructing cages. His unfailing good humor, untiring work and command of the situation has been one of the outstanding features in the work of Corps P.W. cages. Sgt HOUGHTING has been working in close touch with DAAG, 9 Corps, who cannot too strongly express his admiration for the devotion to duty of Sgt HOUGHTING and his willingness to carry out order in almost impossible situations. This is the only recommendation for an award which I am making in my Company, and I feel that an award to Sgt HOUGHTING who is one of my oldest NCOs would be a tribute to the Company as a whole.Capt Townsend OC 111 Pro Coy.
