CAPTURE OF A SPY - And Bravery Under Heavy Shell Fire, EARNS DCM AND MSM - Presentation at Council Meeting. A detachment of the 12th Bedfordshire Regiment was lined up in the Croydon Council Chamber on Monday evening when the Distinguished Conduct Medal and the Meritorious Serve Medal were presented to Staff Sergt.-Major Dobson, of the Military Mounted Police, whose home is at Welcome Terrace, Whyteleafe. The recipient enlisted in July 1908, in the Royal Artillery and was transferred to the MMP in June 1912. In August 1914 the proceeded to France and has been there continuously since. He has seen most of the big fighting. SSM Dobson was awarded the DCM for continuous work at Ypres, IE. handling traffic, prisoners, etc. under heavy shell fire and he received the MSM for catching a spy who was subsequently tried at Armentieres, found guilty and shot. On behalf of the Council, the Major congratulated the soldier and his relatives, remarking, "That man has distinctly given meritorious service to his country." The medals were pinned to the Sergt. Major's tunic by Lieut. Colonel G Thompson (commanding troops in Croydon), Capt. and Adjutant S J Long was also present. |
