A LYNSTED PATERNITY CASE.
At the Faversham County Petty Sessions on Thursday, before Mr W. W. Berry (in the chair), General P.D. Jeffreys, CB, Mr F. Neame, Mr. H. Leney, Mr W R Dixon and Mr. J. French, Austin Leonard Baker of the Military Mounted Police, whose home is at Bapchild, was summoned to show cause why he should not contribute towards the maintenance of the illegitimate male child of Gertrude Fanny Wyles, of 5, Claxfield Village, Lynsted. Mr. Booth Hearn, Chatham, represented the applicant and Mr Goldie of Rochester, appeared for defendant.
It appeared that defendant was originally a labourer, but when the war broke out he joined the County Police Force. The child was born on October 6th, 1915, but before proceedings could be taken defendant joined the Army and was sent overseas. According to applicant she had been walking out with defendant for a good many years and was looked upon as his intended wife.
A large number of witnesses were called on both sides and after a hearing which lasted from 11am to 4.30pm, with the exception of a short interval for lunch, the Bench dismissed the case for want of sufficient corroborative evidence.
